Winneconne, Wis., Nov. 16, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis cross country programs had a strong day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Lake Breeze Golf Club on Saturday.
The No. 2 WashU women's program netted 37 points to secure their 10th Midwest Regional title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Senior Paige Lawler paced the 6K field to her first-place finish with a time of 21:53.0. Fellow senior Sophie Watterson crossed the finish line in fourth-place (22.24.5) while junior Katie Snodgrass came in seventh-place (22:29.2). Sophomore Sophie Young tallied a time of 22:36.8 to finish in 12thplace as junior Megan Girmscheid came in right behind her at 22:41.6 in 13th.
Also competing for the Bears women's squad, freshman Ella Behrens crossed the finish line at 22:47.8 (15th) and junior Zarya deSouza finished in 23:13.8 (35th). All seven of the women's runners collected All-Region honors.
The No. 8 WashU men's program took third with 98 total points on the 8K course. Senior Nick Matteucci led the Bears with a fourth-place finished at 24:48.8.
Senior Marco Quaroni crossed at 25:17.0 (19th) as junior Joe Stover came in right behind him at 25:21.5 (20th). Sophomore Patrick Norrick put together a time of 25:27.0 (27th) while junior Tucker Cera rounded out WashU with a time of 25:31.6 (31st). The men's squad also collected All-Region honors with their top-35 finishes.
