No. 5 WashU Runs Past Dominican 5-0 in 1st Round

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 11, 2017 – The No. 5-ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Dominican University (Ill.) in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 16-1-1 with the win, while Dominican ended its season with a 17-1-4 mark. The Bears take on the winner of Thomas More College and Wittenberg University Sunday at 7 p.m. in the second round.

WashU dominated play outshooting Dominican 39-1, and the Bears had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Stars entered the contest with eight-straight shutouts, and had not allowed a goal since Oct. 4.

Freshman Emma Greenfield (67:22, one save) picked up the win in goal, while sophomore Katy Hutson played the final 22:38 to record the Bears' 12th shutout of the season.

"The team played well keep the ball to feet. The more we would keep the ball, we could minimize their talented attackers," said WashU head coach Jim Conlon. "We played a lot of people and they level of the game stayed high."

Sophomore Taylor Cohen scored two goals to increase her conference-leading total to 15, while junior Darcy Cunningham dished out three assists in the win. Cunningham is second in the UAA with 11 assists.

WashU was on the offensive prowl from the very start and found the back of the net in the 15th minute after Cohen headed home a corner kick from Cunningham.

In the 40th minute senior Mariana Alisio nearly made it a two-goal game but her sliding shot went just wide of the post. Just before half, freshman Katy Mockett fired a left-footed shot from the left corner that snuck into the left corner. 

WashU outshot Dominican 16-0 in the first half and the Bears had eight shots on goal.

Abbey Brown came up with a big save for Dominican in the 49th minute when she denied a shot from Alisio and tipped it over the cross bar for a corner.

Cohen scored her second goal in the 61st minute, and then freshman Ellie DeConinck netted her 10th goal of the season in the 68th minute. Sophomore Isabelle Tamburro added a goal on as assist from Alisio in the 84th minute to round out the scoring.                                                                                    

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU and Dominican met for the first time in school history … The Bears are 22-2-2 all-time at home in NCAA play  … DeConinck is the second Bear to record 10 or more goals this season (10) … WashU has a 34-13-8 (.691) all-time record in 17 all-time NCAA appearances … Cohen's 15 goals are the fifth-most in a single season … Cunningham's 11 assists are seventh most in a single season.
