No. 3 Women’s Golf Captures Inaugural UAA Championship

Sorrento, Fla., March 9, 2015 – No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis led from start to finish as the Bears captured the inaugural University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship held March 8-9 at RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.

Washington U. posted a two-day score of 630 (315-315) to win the first-ever conference title by 20 strokes over No. 11-ranked and second place New York University. The Violets, who trailed by 17 strokes after day one, fired a two-day total of 650 (332-318). Carnegie Mellon University rounded out the three-team field with a 750 (388-362).

Senior Olivia Lugar (75-75) defeated junior Connie Zhou (78-72) on the second playoff hole to claim the individual championship. Both carded a 150 over the two-day tournament. Zhou's 72 on day two was the low score of the tournament. Lugar and Zhou each earned first-team all-UAA honors, while freshman Erin Drolet finished fourth with a 159 (76-83) and also picked up first-team accolades.

"Coming out here and playing so well as a team was a boost of confidence since we had not hit on grass yet this year," said Lugar. "When I look at competitors, I look at Connie because she pushes me everyday. It was fun to go out and play a couple holes just one-on-one with her."

Junior Erin Lawrence competed as an individual and placed sixth with a two-day total of 162 (80-82) to earn second-team all-UAA accolades. Lawrence was joined on the all-UAA second team by sophomore Samantha Han (86-87, 173, 10th place) and Jessica Wibawa (88-85, 173, 10th place). In addition, head coach Sean Curtis was named the 2015 UAA Coach of the Year.

"I am very excited we got to participate in the first-ever UAA Championship and thrilled for our team to come down to Spring Training and perform the way we did," said Curtis. "We shot the same both days and had different people step up."

Washington U. continues its Spring Break Trip at the George Fox Westbrook Invite Saturday-Sunday, March 14-15, in Peoria, Ariz.
