Lugar and Fang Leads No. 3 Women's Golf on Day One at Millikin Fall Classic

Decatur, Ill., September 21, 2013 – The No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team fired an opening round 315 and has the overall lead after day one of the Millikin University Fall Classic held at Scovill Golf Course in Decatur, Ill.

Washington U. had three players shoot 80 or lower, and has a 27-shot lead over No. 9 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. Clarke University (351), Washington University B-Team (352) and John A. Logan Community College (354) round out the top five of the 15-team tournament.

Junior Olivia Lugar fired an opening round 76 (36-40) and has the individual lead after 18 holes. Lugar had five birdies on the day and is tied for the tournament lead playing the Par 4s and Par 5s each at -1. Freshman Xin Fang is two shots back in second place after an opening round 78 (40-38). Fang was also consistent on the Par 5s, tying Lugar for the tournament lead at -1.

Freshman Samantha Han (37-43, 80) sits in fourth place after four birdies on day one, senior Andrea Hibbert (40-41, 81) is tied for fifth place and sophomore Connie Zhou (36-47, 83) is tied for ninth.

Washington University's B team was led by graduate student Melanie Walsh, who shot an 83 (42-41) and is tied for ninth place. Walsh was second in the field with 11 pars on day one.

Sophomore Erin Lawrence (38-46, 84, 12th place), freshman Jessica Wibawa (44-47, 91, 26th place), senior Allyson Chee (46-48, 94, 33rd place and juniorMackenzie Findlay (47-50, 97, 53rd place) also completed for Washington U's B squad. Lawrence is tied with Lugar for the tournament lead in Par 4 scoring (-1) and second in birdies with four.

The final round of the Millikin Fall Classic will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. at Red Tail Run Golf Course.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. was first as a team in par 3 scoring (3.72), par 4 scoring (4.20) and par 5 scoring (5.11) … The Bears had a tournament-best 16 birdies as a team.
