Dubuque, Iowa, Nov. 15, 2019 – The No. 24-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team dropped their 2019-20 season opener to Loras College, 93-81, on Friday at the Loras Tip-Off Classic.
The Bears (0-1) take on Augustana (Ill.) in the consolation game at Noon on Saturday, Nov. 16. Loras (2-0) will play No. 17 UW-Oshkosh at 4 p.m. in the championship contest.
WashU had nine of the 10 players who saw the court score at least one point with three players scoring in double-figures. Sophomore Isabelle Hren led the Bears with a career-high 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, while sophomore Samantha Weaver chipped in a career-best 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior Kristina Schmelter tallied 11 points and four boards.
The Bears had a five-point lead (10-5) with 6:30 left in the first quarter after getting three pointers from freshmen Molly Gannon and Sammi Matoush. The Duhawks then kicked it into gear to close out the quarter with an 11-point lead, 30-19.
Loras' lead ballooned to 14 points at 39-25 at the 4:36 mark in the second quarter, but the Bears were able to chip it away and get within four at the half, 45-41. Matoush and freshman Karisa Grandison both hit a three-pointer while Hren and freshman Maya Arnott nailed jumpers and the Bears went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe during the run.
WashU tied the game at 52-all at 5:40 in the third quarter and quickly pushed their lead to six on a jumper and two free throws from Weaver and a bucket from Hren. The Duhawks would battle to close out the quarter tied at 64-64
In the fourth quarter, WashU was called for 10 fouls as three Bears fouled out of the contest. Loras was able to push its lead to 12 as they went to the foul line 12 times in the last minute of the quarter and went 37-for-46 from the charity stripe for the game. The squads combined for 61 total fouls, just seven shy of the NCAA Division III record.
