Tenacious Defense Leads No. 7 WashU Past New York

Pleasantville, N.Y., Feb. 17, 2017 – The No. 7-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team remained in a tie for first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 66-37 win at New York University Friday on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y.

WashU won its ninth-straight game to improve to 21-2, 10-2 in the UAA, while New York dropped to 13-10, 3-9 in the UAA. WashU and Chicago remain in a tie for first place in the UAA standings with two games remaining.

The Bears 37 points allowed was a season-low and WashU limited NYU to 25 percent (11-44) shooting from the field.

Junior Natalie Orr scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while sophomore Madeline Homoly had 15 points and six rebounds. The Bears shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the field and had a 39-35 rebound advantage.

WashU jumped out to a commanding 24-5 lead after one as the Bears scored the final 16 points of the quarter. Orr drained a 30-foot three at the buzzer as she had 10 points to lead all scorers. The Bears shot 8-of-13 from the field in the opening quarter.

Senior Lilly Sarros scored the first two buckets of the second quarter and sophomore Rachael Sondag nailed a three from the top of the key to make it 33-6. WashU did not allow a field goal in the second quarter.

WashU took a 39-9 lead to the locker room as the Bears limited NYU to 10.5 percent (2-of-19) shooting with 11 turnovers. Orr led WashU with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the Bears shot 46.9 percent from the field and had just two turnovers.

The Bears scored seven-straight points in the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 56-18 with 1:55 to play in the quarter.

Gabby Heinsinger led New York with nine points off the bench.

WashU plays its final road game of the regular season Sunday, Feb. 19, at Brandeis University (11-12, 3-9 UAA). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (ET).
