St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 17, 2019 – Washington University in St. Louis opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play at home against No. 5-ranked North Central College on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. The Bears had a bye week following a 43-7 win at the University of Chicago in the 2019 season opener Sept. 7.

THE SERIES – North Central leads the all-time series with WashU, 5-1. The Bears lone victory against the Cardinals came on Sept. 22, 2007 in Naperville when WashU upset then No. 14 North Central 16-13.

THE COACHES – WashU head coach Larry Kindbom (Kalamazoo, 1974) is in his 31st season leading the Bears, with a record of 186-116 (.615). His 186 wins rank him as the all-time winningest coach at WashU. Overall, in 37 seasons, Kindbom has a 214-146-1 (.594) overall record and led the Bears to three NCAA Division III playoff appearances. He announced on Sept. 11 that he will be retiring at the end of the 2019 season.

North Central head coach Jeff Thorne (Eastern Illinois, 1993) is 39-8 (.830) in his five seasons as a collegiate head coach, all of which have come at North Central. Thorne is the 25th head coach in the history of the program. 

RANKINGS – WashU is ranked No. 24 in the D3football.com Top-25 poll, while North Central is No. 5. The No. 24 ranking is the highest in the 17-year history of the D3football.comPoll.

WASHU PICKED FOURTH IN CCIW POLL– The Bears were picked fourth in the 2019 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Annual Preseason Coaches' Poll. WashU was selected fourth out of 10 teams with 57 points.
